Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:methanol;Indole-2-carboxylic acid with sulfuric acid for 12 h;Heating / reflux;
Stage #2: in methanol;water; pH=7

Commercially available indole-2-carboxylic acid 200 (1.61 g, 10 mmol) and concentrated H2SO4 (0.5 mL) were refluxed in dry MeOH (50 mL) for 12 hours. The solution was then cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. Water (25 mL) was added to the residue and adjusted the pH to 7. EPO The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 15 mL). The combined organic phase was dried with MgSCU, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to afford 201 (1.75 g 100%). The product was used for the next step without further purification.
