[0262] Synthesis of methyl l-(phenylsulfonyl)-lH-indole-2-carboxylate. To a solution of methyl lH-indole-2-carboxylate (350 mg, 2 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL), was added sodium hydride (60%, 120 mg, 3.0 mmol), followed by addition of benzenesulfonyl chloride (0.26 mL, 2 mmol) at room temperature. After stirring for 1 hour, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (30 mL) and washed with brine (20 mL x 3). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, concentrated, and purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate:hexanes = 5:95 to 20:80) to afford 605 mg of the title compound as white solid
