Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 2-(Aminomethyl)pyridine;benzaldehyde in methanol at 20; for 2 h;
Stage #2: with methanol;sodium tetrahydroborate at 20; for 1 h;Cooling with ice;

Steps:

1.i (i) Synthesis of 1a

A mixture of 2-picolylamine (0.41 ml, 4.0 mmol) and benzaldehyde (0.4 ml, 4.0 mmol) in 40 ml MeOH was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours.
The solution was cooled in an ice bath, NaBH₄ (0.3 g, 8 mmol) was added in small portions.
The mixture was slowly warmed to room temperature, and stirred for 1 hour.
Solvent was removed and the residue was re-dissolved in CH₂Cl₂, washed with saturated K₂CO₃ solution twice and with a solution of brine and dried over MgSO₄.
Solvents were removed by a rotatory evaporator to give benzyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine (1a) which was used in the next step without further purification. Yield=0.79 g, quant.
