Steps:

The bipyridine (0.90 g, 4.2 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of 48% HBr (20 mL) and concentrated sulfuric acid (6.7 mL). The resulting solution was refluxed for 6 h and then allowed to cool to room temperature, and 40 mL of water was added. The pH was adjusted to neutral with NaOH solution and the resulting precipitate filtered, washed with water (pH = 7), and air-dried. The product was dissolved in chloroform (40 mL) and filtered. The solution was dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to get a white powder. Yield: 1.2 g (85%). ¹H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl₃) δ (ppm) 4.50 (s, 4H), 7.38 (d, 2H), 8.45 (s, 2H), 8.68 (d, 2H).
