(c) 2-(5-methyl-2-phenyloxazol-4-yl)acetic acid (84) KOH (1.79 g, 31.8 mmole) was added to a solution of 4-(2-Cyanoethyl)-5-methyl-2-phenyloxazole (83) (1.5 g, 7.07 mmole) in ethanol/H₂O at room temperature. The mixture was then heated at reflux for 20 hours. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in H₂O, washed with ether, and the aqueous layer was acidified with 1 N HCl. The product was collected by filtration and dried to give a white powder. 0.7 g (44% yield).
