Steps:
2-Benzyloxycarbonylamino-5-phthalimido-pentanoic acid (4-1) was synthesized from a mixture of Z-ornithine (1 equiv). N-carethoxy-phthalimide (1 equiv), and TEA (1.2 equiv) in dry THF and refluxed overnight. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, the residue dissolved in EtOAc, and washed successively with 1 N HCl, water, brine, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated in vacuo to afford the crude product, which was used for the next reaction without further purification.
