Nalbuphine alkaloid (33.1g) was charged to a flask containing ethanol (79ml ) and water (20 ml) and the mixture heated to 500C. Concentrated Hydrochloric acid (9.1 mis) was added to adjust to within the pH range 4 - 4.5. The resulting solution was cooled to <10°C using an ice bath and held for ~ 2 hours and filtered. The Nalbuphine hydrochloride solid was washed with ethanol:water (10.6ml:2.6ml) and dried at 55°C in a fan oven to afford 35.27 g (89 % theory) of Nalbuphine hydrochloride.
