General procedure: Following a literature procedure,20 ethyl 2-chloro-2-oxoacetate (1.2 equiv) was added dropwise to a solution of the corresponding amine (1 equiv) and pyridine (1.2 equiv) in CH2Cl2 (1 M) at 0 °C. The resulting mixture was stirred at r.t. until full conversion of the starting material was detected (TLC analysis, for reaction time, see the corresponding substrate). The mixture was diluted with EtOAc (1 mL/mmol) at r.t. and successively washed with 1 M aq HCl (2 × 2 mL/mmol), sat. aq NaHCO3 (2 mL/mmol), and brine (2 mL/mmol). The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and all volatiles were removed under reduced pressure to yield the corresponding 2-oxoacetates.
