Platinum(IV) oxide (0.016 g, 0.069 mmol) was added to a suspension of 1-(1 ,1- dimethylethyl) 2-methyl 6-nitro-1 /-/-indole-1 ,2-dicarboxylate (0.443 g, 1.383 mmol) in ethanol (20 ml_). The mixture was evacuated and flushed with nitrogen three times, flushed with hydrogen (50 Psi) and evacuated three times, then filled with hydrogen (50 psi). After 1 h, ethyl acetate was added and the mixture was filtered through Celite. The solvent was evaporated to afford the title compound (0.373 g, 93%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3-d): δ ppm 7.41 (d, 1 H), 7.35 (d, 1 H), 7.04 (s, 1 H), 6.65 (dd, 1 H), 3.88 (s, 3 H), 1.55 (s, 9 H). MS: m/z 291 (M+1 ).
