Steps:

I.I I. General Procedure for Reactions in NMR Tubes
General procedure: In a representative procedure, to a solution of acid chloride such as 4-BrC6H4COCl (0.043 g, 0.20 mmol), HSiMe2Ph (0.030 mL, 0.20 mmol), internal standard (tetramethylsilane (TMS) or Cp2Fe), and t-BuCN (0.002-0.004 mL, 10-20 mol %) in acetone-d6 (0.6 mL) was added [Cp(Pri3P)Ru(NCMe)2]+[PF6]- (0.005 g, 5 mol %). The resulting mixture was mixed at room temperature and the progress of the reaction was monitored by NMR spectroscopy. The order of mixing the reagents other than the catalyst can differ as the reagents have not been observed to react with each other in the absence of a catalyst. However, it is useful to add the catalyst as the last reagent because addition of the catalyst before the nitrile has been observed to result in the deactivation of the catalyst.
