Steps:
One-pot synthesis of pyrimidin-2(1H)-ones (general procedure).
General procedure: To a solution of ethyl acetoacetate(1 mmol), urea (1 mmol) and aromatic aldehyde (1 mmol) in acetonitrile-water (10 : 2 mL) was added 1,4-bis(triphenylphosphonium)-2-butene peroxodisulfate(1.1 mmol). The reaction mixture was refluxed upon stirring for 4 h. Water (10 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with chloroform (3 × 15 mL). The organic layer was separated and dried overMgSO4. The solvent was evaporated and the product was purified by column chromatography on silica gelusing a mixture of ethyl acetate and n-hexane (1 : 3) asan eluent.
