Compound 4. 1 -chloro-2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethane (2.34 mL, 20 mmol) was added dropwise to a mixture of K2C03 (1.38 g, 10 mmol) and 4-(2,4,4-trimethylpentan-2-yl)phenol (2.06 g, 10 mmol) in dry DMF (30 mL) under argon at 80 °C. The reaction mixture was cooled down, diluted with water (20 mL) and extracted trice with ethyl acetate (30 mL). Combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was then purified by flash column chromatography (EP/CH2CI2 70/30) to provide the expected compound as a clear oil in 62% yield (1 .95 g, 6.23 mmol). TLC flf 0.68 (EP/CH2CI2 1 :1 ). H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3) δ 7.24 (d, 3JHH = 8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.81 (d, 3JHH = 8.8 Hz, 2H), 4.10 (t, 3JHH = 4.8 Hz, 2H), 3.78 (m, 4H), 3.62 (m, 2H), 1 .67 (s, 2H), 1.32 (s, 6H), 0.68 (s, 9H). 3C-NMR (100 MHz, CDCI3) δ 156.5, 142.8, 127.3, 1 14.0, 71 .7, 71 .6, 57.2, 42.9, 42.8, 38.2, 32.5, 31.9, 31 .8.
