A phenoxypropanoic acid (formula XVI, X = O, or S, n = 2, 6.0 mmol) was dissolved in benzene and P2O5 was added. The mixture was refluxed for 2 hours and then cooled to ambient temperature. The benzene was decanted off and the residue was quenched with ice water. The mixture was extracted with diethyl ether three times and the combined organic extracts were partitioned with saturated sodium bicarbonate, and then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography, product eluted with a gradient of 0-20% ethyl acetate in hexanes, to give a white solid of formula (XVII, X = O, or S, n = 2).
