Step 2. 4-(methylsulfonyl)phenol Oxone (0.99 g, 6.5 mmol) (Aldrich cat22803-6) was added in portions to a solution of 4-(methylthio)phenol (0.50 g, 3.2 mmol) in ethanol (10.0 mL) and water (10.0 mL) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred for 18 h then partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo to afford 4-(methylsulfonyl)phenol as a semisolid (0.60 g, 96%). LCMS calculated for C7H9O3S (M+H)+: m/z = 173.0; found: 173.0.
