2.1 Synthesis of p-Tolylamidoxime (2a) Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.3 g, 18 mmol) was added to a solution of Et3 N (2.5 mL, 18 mmol) in 50% aqueous EtOH (4.2 mL). After 30 minutes p-methylbenzonitrile (1.7 g, 15 mmol) in EtOH (40 mL) was added and the mixture was allowed to reflux for 8 hours. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and poured into water (100 mL). The aqueous solution was decanted, concentrated to half of its original volume. Upon standing the product crystallized to afford 2a as a white solid (1.7 g, 62 %); m/z (M+H)+ 150.2 (C8 H110 N2 O).
