A mixture of 4-iodophenylacetic acid (3 g, 11.5 mmol, 1 e.q.) and thionyl chloride (5 mL, 49 mmol, 4.5 e.q.) was heated in an 80 °C oil bath under argon for 2 h. The reaction is then allowed to cool to room temperature. The excess thionyl chloride is removed in vacuum to give 6 as a dark yellow oil (3.2 g, 100%) which is used without further purification. NMR (300 MHz, CDCb) d 4.11 (2 H, s, CH2), 7.03 & 7.73(4 H, AA'XX', Ph-H).
