Sodium acetate anhydrous (3.10 g, 37.8 mmol), was added to a solution of 4- aminophenylacetonitrile (5.00 g, 37.8 mmol) in acetic anhydride (10 ml). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux temperature overnight, before being concentrated in vacuo. The residue was taken up in dichloromethane (20 ml) and washed successively with 1M sodium hydroxide aq. solution (40 ml), 1M HCI aq. (20 ml) and water (2 x 20 ml). The organic extract was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The crude residue was purified by silica gel chromatography [dichloromethane/0-5% methanol] in order to obtain the title compound as a beige solid (4. 74g, 72%)
