Steps:
General procedure from a ketone.
General procedure: To an oven-dried, round bottom flask containing the aldehyde (1 mmol) and ethanol absolute (2 mL) at room temperature, was added sodium borohydrate (27 mg, 0.67mmol). The reaction was stirred for 30 min.* Aqueous NaOH solution (2 M) was then added slowly until the precipitate is completely dissolved. Ethanol was removed under vacuum. A saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution and dichloromethane were then added and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane (2 x) and then the combined organic extracts were washed with water and brine, then dried over MgSO4. Products were obtained in quantitative yield and used without further purifications. *Reaction was performed in a mixture of THF/ethanol (1:1) and stirred overnight for the synthesis of 4,4'-dimethoxybenzhydrol.
