Steps:

(14a) A solution of cyclopentanone (2.0 g, 23.8 mmol), paraformaldehyde (2.0 g), and N-methylaniline trifluoroacetic acid salt (12.7 g, 57.4 mmol) in 25 mL of THF was refluxed for 15 min and then partitioned between ether and 2*1N HCl and separated. The organic phase was dried over MgSO₄, filtered, and concentrated on a rotary evaporator to give 2-methylene-cyclopentanone.
