Preparation of 2-methyl-2-(4-methylpyridin-2-yl)propanenitrile; 2-Fluoro-4-methylpyridine (1.0 g, 9 mmol), KH(Si(CH3)3)2, (27 mL, 13.5 mmol, 0.5 M solution in toluene) and 2-methylpropanenitrile (3.2 mL) were refluxed in toluene for 1 h. The reaction was quenched with saturated NH4Cl, the organics separated, dried (MgSO4), concentrated in-vacuo and the residue purified by column chromatography (20% EtOAc/pet ether) to give 2-methyl-2-(4-methylpyridin-2-yl)propanenitrile (1.22 g, 92%). MS m/z 161.4 (calc'd for C10H12N2).
