(RS)-Amino-(4-iodo-phenyl)-acetonitrile (6.40 g) was suspended in 5 N aq hydrochloric acid (100 ml) and the mixture was heated at reflux overnight. The mixture was then cooled first to room temperature and then to 0^oC. whereby crystals formed. The crystals were collected by filtration, washing with heptane, and were dried in vacuo at 60^oC. to afford (RS)-amino-(4-iodo-phenyl)-acetic acid hydrochloride (6.34 g, 82%) as a light brown crystalline solid. MS (ISP): 275.9 ([M-H]^-).
