To a stirred solution of malononitrile (2.64 g, 40.0 mmol) in acetic anhydride (9 mL) was added 1 ,1 , 1 -triethoxypropane (8.04 g, 40.0 mmol). The solution was stirred for 15 h at reflux, cooled, and poured into water. The mixture was extracted with ether, and the organic extract was washed with aqueous NaHC03 and then brine. The solution was dried (MgS04) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a solid identified as 2-(l -ethoxypropylidene)malononitrile (5.80 g, 97%). The procedure was adapted from J Med. Chem. 2004, 47, 5894-591 1 .
