9.1 Step 1 to synthesize compound 13
A mixture of 5-chloro-l-methyl-4-nitro-imidazole (2 g, 12.38 mmol) in NTb/MeOH (10 mL, 7 M) was stirred at 100°C for 16 hr in an autoclave. The mixture was cooled down to room temperature, and the precipitation was filtered, washed with MeOH (10 mL x 2), dried to afford 3-methyl-5-nitro-imidazol-4-amine (1.6 g, 11.26 mmol, 91% yield) as a yellow solid. NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-^e): d = 7.55 (s, 2H), 7.25 (s, 1H), 3.47 (s, 3H).
