74.A Step A: Ethyl (Z)-2-(ethoxymethylene)-4,4-difluoro-3-oxobutanoate
Ac2O (50 mL) was added to a mixture of ethyl 4,4-difluoro-3-oxobutanoate (10.0 g, 60.2 mmol) and triethoxymethane (18.3 g, 123 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at 100 C for 8.5 h. After this time the EtOAc was removed using a Dean-Stark trap apparatus to give the title compound (12 g, 90%) as a yellow gum.
