Steps:
General procedure: An oven dried 200 mL three-neck flask, equipped with a magnetic stirring bar, a rubber septum,and a reflux condenser, was charged with K2CO3 (6.91 g, 50 mmol, nacalai), NaI (600 mg, 4.0mmol, nacalai). The flask was evacuated and backfilled with nitrogen. p-Cresol (1.08 g, 10 mmol,TCI) dissolved in acetone (20 mL), chloroacetone (970 μL, 12 mmol, TCI) was added to the flask,and the mixture was refluxed for 2 h. After cooling to room temperature, water (30 mL) was addedto the flask. The organic materials were extracted with EtOAc (75 mL x 3), washed with brine (75mL), and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The crude product was purified by columnchromatography on silica gel (SiliaFlash; eluent: 30% EtOAc in hexane). S1 (1.54 g, 9.4 mmol,94%) was obtained as a colorless oil.
