EXAMPLE 3A L-fucose (2.0 g, 12.2 mmol) was dissolved in pyridine (15 mL) and cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath. Benzoyl chloride (7.1 mL, 60.1 mmol) was added though a dropping funnel over 5 minutes, after which the ice bath was removed and the reaction was allowed to stir at RT for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water (100 mL) and extracted into EtOAc (3*100 mL). The residues were washed with ice-cold 1 M HCl (2*100 mL) and brine (100 mL), followed by drying over MgSO₄. After removal of solvents under vacuum, the resulting semi-solid was purified using silica-gel column chromatography (EtOAC:PE=3:7), yielding a crystalline colourless solid (6.9 g, 93%).
