Biological Activity

Neural proliferation differentiation and control protein 1 (NPDC1) is mainly involved in regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation. It also functions as a regulator of retinoic acid-mediated events. NPDC-1 binds to E2F-1 (a transcription factor) and other cyclins to aid differentiation in neuronal precursor cells. This binding prevents E2F-1 from binding to the DNA, thus inhibiting E2F-1-mediated transcription events from taking place. NPDC-1 interacts with cell cycle control proteins to regulate neuronal differentiation and plays a role as a tumor suppressor protein. It is a co-regulator of RXR-mediated transcription. The mechanism of inhibition is through altering the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and RXR DNA binding.
