7β-hydroxycholesterol-d7 (7β-OHC) along with 7-ketocholesterol (7-KC) plays a key role in atherogenesis. It is distributed extensively in the arterial compartment of apo- E knockout mice. 7βOHC induces apoptosis via activation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3). It also triggers reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction. 7βOHC favors demyelination and is a potential oxidized oxysterol in X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) disorder. | [storage]
